16 years on from hosting arguably one of the most successful events in Commonwealth Games history, we’re taking a moment during Gold Coast 2018 to reflect on Manchester’s incredible journey and recognise the event that significantly changed the landscape of sport and leisure across our city.forever.

The Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002 not only consolidated our global reputation as THE city for sport (setting the benchmark for future games), but also provided the perfect catalyst to establish one of the largest volunteer programmes in the UK that has gone from strength to strength for nearly 2 decades now.which, simply put, would not be the success story it is today without our most valuable asset – YOU!

And it’s not just bravado, we’ll let the facts speak for themselves.over 16 years our volunteers have

– Grown to almost 6,000 members
– Logged over 73,000 hours
– Supported 1,000+ individual opportunities
– Attended well-over 38,000 sessions
Impressive stuff!

As a simple gesture of appreciation and thank you to our volunteers, we would love you to attend our FREE COMMONWEALTH LUNCH at Manchester Regional Arena on Friday 20th April from 12.30pm through to 2.30pm.

We have created the lunch as an opportunity on MCRVIP.com, if you’re able to attend, please sign-up to the lunch before Friday 13th April.

This lunch will be an opportunity to meet fellow volunteers from as far back as 2002 (some you may not have seen for 16 years) and share stories and experiences from 2002 and beyond. If you still have your kit, or any memorabilia from the Games, feel free to wear on the day or bring with you.

We will also be setting up a Social Media Wall to showcase the cohesive volunteering community that has grown since 2002. Please include #MCR16YEARSON in any Tweets, Facebook or Instagram posts around the Commonwealth Games, or any volunteering you’re undertaking, and we’ll pick these up!

We will also be looking to capture some of your stories on the day of the lunch too.

Parking is available on site through Gate 2 (blue car park) or the Etihad Campus tram stop is on site and only 2 minute walk. Free tea, coffee and soft drinks will also be available.

We look forward to meeting you on the day. Please make your way to the Trackside Suite of the Indoor Arena.
